Worried about someone?

It may be difficult to know what to do if you are worried about someone's alcohol or other drug use, or their health and well-being. Helping someone who is not ready to address their problems can be challenging when the decision for them to get help is ultimately theirs.

If you do approach the person you are concerned about, there are several things you may want to consider before doing so.

Be informed - It is a good idea to have a general knowledge about the problem they may be facing.  This site provides information about a range of drug & alcohol and health & well-being topics, as well as links to sites that provide detailed information.

Discuss issues openly - Let the person you are concerned about know that you will listen to them without being judgmental. This might make them more comfortable to talk about their problems feeling they won't be criticised or looked down on.

Speak to a counsellor yourself first - Sometimes it is sensible to seek help and advice yourself if someone's problems are impacting your life, or, to find out the best way to approach a problem.  This site provides links and contacts for national telephone helplines, as well as support services provided by universities that can assist you in dealing with issues of well-being, alcohol and other drugs.
